As of Thursday morning, results from Senate races in Arizona, Nevada, and Alaska have yet to come in. Nevada and Alaska are currently Republican-leaning, while Arizona tips toward the Democratic side. Georgia is scheduled for a runoff election, as neither the Democratic candidate, Raphael Warnock, nor the Republican candidate, Herschel Walker, was able to reach a 50% majority vote. The Democrats currently have 46 seats, while the GOP has 49 seats; 51 seats are needed for a majority. The deciding states for the Senate are Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona. For Democrats, losing either Nevada or Arizona would mean that Georgia is the deciding factor for who has a majority in the Senate.
In the Governor results, Ron DeSantis won Florida by 11 points over his Democratic opponent and made a significant gain in Hispanic communities. In Texas, Gregg Abbot wins the governor race but lags in Hispanic communities, which have swung to the right, but to a lesser degree than Florida. Results for governor in Oregon, Nevada, Alaska, and Arizona are still not in. However, Oregon and Arizonans are Democrat-leaning, while Alaska and Nevada are republican-leaning. So far, there are 22 Democratic and 24 Republican governors; Democrats have gained two seats, and the GOP has lost two seats.
Democrats have lost eight house seats in the house while the Republicans have gained six. Currently, Democrats have 184 seats, and the GOP has 207; 391 of 435 seats up for election have been called thus far, and 218 seats are needed for a majority. While Democrats are not in the lead, Republicans are winning the race by a slimmer margin than expected. In general, the election has been closer than expected.
