Russian authorities have detained American Wall Street Journalist Evan Gershkovich and accused him of being a foreign agent. Russia claimed that the American detained was "acting on US instructions" and was caught seeking Kremlin secrets. This move only intensified a series of actions against the USA and foreign media outlets since the War on Ukraine began last February.
The FSB, Russia's security service, claims that Gershkovich attempted to obtain state secrets. However, the Wall Street Journal denies these allegations and is demanding his release. This arrest marks the first time since the Cold War that an American journalist has been arrested on such charges. While the specifics of the trial are unknown, it is evident that journalism in Russia is under threat, and foreign journalists are not welcome.
