Argentina’s 2022 World Cup Win

By: Demi Conteh

Argentina defeated France in a thrilling penalty shootout on Sunday, ending Lionel Messi's wait for World Cup success. With the game tied 3-3 after extra time and the momentum swinging both ways for the entire 120 minutes.

Gonzalo Montiel then scored the game-winning penalty shot. Messi, who was competing in his fifth and last World Cup, scored twice. Mbappé of France scored an incredible hat trick, the first in a final since 1966.

Angel di Maria's goal in the first half, along with Messi's penalty appeared to have ended the match in regulation time. However, Mbappé scored two goals, including one from the penalty spot, in a span of only a few minutes to square the game.

Mbappé's third goal earned him the Golden Boot, awarded to the tournament's best scorer after he scored eight goals in Qatar, but it wasn't enough to propel France to back-to-back World Cup victories.

He also became just the second player, after Geoff Hurst in 1966, to score three goals in a final. Messi and Mbappé each made a successful attempt in the penalty shootout.
