BLM's Financial Management Questioned by Supporters and Critics Alike

by Eric Yue

In 2020, millions of people from Minneapolis to London protested against police brutality after the tragic death of George Floyd. During that time, an activist group known as the Black Lives Matters Movement grew to prominence. The movement, along with its popularity and support, also gained millions of dollars of aid, funds, and donations from people hoping to encourage and support the continuation of the fight for racial justice around the world.

However, with all that money, some people wanted to know where those funds were going. Last month, the New York Magazine published a paper that revealed the answer to that question – a $6 million mansion in Southern California.

A real-estate listing records that the house spans more than 6,500 square feet and has half a dozen bedrooms and bathrooms, a soundstage, a pool and bungalow, and parking areas for potentially more than 20 cars. And all of this, according to the Magazine, was bought for $6 million in cash in October 2020 with the same money that was donated to the BLM movement.

Although public statements were made by board members who had denied the allegation, the news only sparked more frustration and further questions about how the organization has spent its money. According to information from the New York Magazine, BLM collected over 90 million dollars in 2020 alone and over 60 million more in 2021. While millions of dollars were spent on logistics and organizing rallies and demonstrations around the nation and the globe, millions remained unidentified.

Public disapproval continues to grow, according to NBC News, as the founders deny the allegations of misusing the funds. As the ongoing investigation unfolds, questions will continue to pop up about the usage of the funds and the usage of well-meaning people’s money.
