California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Mariposa County, California, due to the Oak Fire that commenced on Sunday, July 24th. The fire began near the Midpines and has spread on a larger scale.
The Oak Fire is now the largest wildfire in 2022, spreading more than 16,000 acres and is only 10% contained as of Monday morning, according to CalFire. Despite no clear, identifiable cause, as of now, the impact has been detrimental. It forced over 3000 residents to evacuate their homes and destroyed approximately ten homes. Over 2000 first responders, local and federal, are dealing with the fire. The cause is currently being investigated.
Since climate change has led to the atmosphere being significantly warmer, making conditions much drier, Western states have experienced extreme weather conditions like this over recent years. Many scientists have said that more extreme weather conditions will be seen in the future, leading to more wildfires that could possibly be more dangerous.
