On Saturday, November 19, a large group gathered at Club Q to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance to raise awareness of the tremendous danger that publicly embracing transgender, gender non-conforming, and gay individuals encountered.
Anderson Lee Aldrich entered Club Q late Saturday night carrying a handgun and an assault-style rifle while wearing camouflage and a bulletproof vest. Prior to being tackled by a club patron, authorities claim within minutes, the shooter had murdered five people and injured 18. The shooter was subsequently held to the ground by several other patrons until help came.
According to Max D'Onofrio, a spokesman for the city, the suspect is accused of five counts of murder and five counts of committing a crime with discriminatory intent resulting in bodily harm. Prosecutors are anticipated to present criminal charges in court.
Richard Fierro, an army veteran and clubgoer stopped the attack by tackling the shooter. Fierro and his family were there to celebrate a friend's birthday while taking in a drag performance featuring his daughter's best friend, who is 22 years old. The outpouring of grief erupted in Colorado Springs and across the nation underscores the sorrow over the lives lost and the profound anger at what many viewed as an assault on a vast community.
