After an "I do" from all 435 Congressional leaders, the 118th Congress is officially sworn in by their new Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy’s victory comes after a historic 15 round of voting, which has not occurred since the 1800s. The final vote ended with six conservative Republicans voting “present” instead of “no” which lowered the threshold needed for McCarthy to win.
Many political analysts saw this historic vote as a sign of a Congress filled with deadlock and stalemate. McCarthy has not shown the ability to unite his own political party, especially in critical votes with their slim majority over the Democrats. The next test of his unifying power will be the crucial vote on the national debt ceiling, which, if not lifted, could shut the government down, causing hundreds of thousands of federal employees to lose their paycheck.
