House Speakership

By: Eric Yue

As the 118th Congress convened on January 3rd, the House of Representatives made history. The U.S. House of Representatives could not elect a Speaker of the House on the first vote, despite the GOP’s majority control over the chamber, something not seen in 100 years. While the top Republican in the House, Kevin McCarthy, vows to stay in the race until he is elected Speaker, the chamber adjourned for the second day in a row, voting six times without a candidate winning the majority of the votes. Despite efforts by McCarthy to reject dozens of requests from his colleagues, around 20 conservative Republicans continuously voted against his speakership. The news comes after a much smaller victory in the 2022 midterms than expected from the GOP, leaving McCarthy with a slim majority over the Democratic party in the House. As the vote for the Speaker goes into its fourth day, Republicans face continuous division over McCarthy while Democrats unite behind their new leader, Hakeem Jeffries of New York.
