The artist Ye, then known as Kanye West, and Donald Trump were preparing to have a quiet, private dinner just two days before Thanksgiving. After weeks of private phone conversations, Ye lost lucrative contracts and turned into a pariah in the general public due to his antisemitic views. According to sources familiar with their discussions, the two men agreed to meet up for dinner on Tuesday night at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
Trump later claimed that he didn't know Fuentes or his background when they dined together; Fuentes backed up this claim in an interview; nonetheless, several patrons at the crowded members-only club were able to identify him. Republican rivals and supporters of Trump and his then-week-old presidential campaign launched a barrage of attacks after learning about the meeting.
Ye warned Trump he might run against him for president and suggested he should be his running mate instead. This infuriated the former president, who then attacked Ye's ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. Ye also chastised Trump for not doing enough to assist in paying the legal fees of those detained in the Capitol rioting on January 6.
