Mar-a-Lago: Raided, Occupied, and Under Siege

By: Alexandra Wong

“My beautiful home, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of F.B.I agents,” says Donald Trump amidst a criminal investigation led by the F.B.I.

Yesterday Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, was searched by the F.B.I. for their new investigation into Trump’s handling of presidential documents. These documents filled up 15 boxes and were plentiful in confidential information. Despite the fact that they were never meant to leave the White House, Trump brought said documents to Mar-a-Lago after his presidential term ended. The National Archives requested the return of these boxes immediately, but Trump ignored the request for months, only yielding once they threatened action for the boxes retrieval. The case was sent to the Justice Department early this year, becoming yet another Trump investigation for the department to deal with.

The recent developments in the case also come at a poor time regarding another of the Justice Department’s investigations with Trump. This separate case regards the former president’s attempt to overturn the last presidential election and stay in office. He also faces criminal inquiries and civil actions in Georgia and New York.

So, does anything happen to him? Is Trump facing punishment? With Trump expected to declare his next presidential bid in 2024, people speculate conviction under Section 2071 of Title 18 of the United States Code. Section 2071 states that it is a crime for somebody who “willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsies or destroys” government documents and records. If convicted, he could face a fine of $2,000 and a three-year prison sentence. He could potentially also “be disqualified from holding” any federal office.

This story is still developing.
