New UK PM Resigns

By: Zohra Rangwala

Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation outside of 10 Downing Street only 45 days after she was elected by the conservative party to replace former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who also stepped down before his time in office would naturally run its course.

After Truss’ dreadful economic plans being U-turned, her cabinet as well as the rest of the Conservative party portrayed their views on her remaining as prime minister in a negative light. Truss, within her month in office, was faced with cabinet resignations, party uproar, and backbench rebellions. She also went on to sack some of her chosen ministers including Kwasi Kwarteng who was then replaced by Jeremy Hunt, the man who initiated the economic U-Turns putting Liz Truss to shame.

Many parties and leaders are calling for a snap general election, especially those of the Labour Party whose winnings are looking promising as the Conservative party dug themselves deeper into trouble after Brexit.

On the morning of the 24th of October, Rishi Sunak was elected Prime Minister by default as he was the only candidate put forward who managed to fulfil the criteria needed. Sunak prevailed against his main opponent Penny Mordaunt as he managed to attain at least 100 conservative MP backers whilst Mordaunt had a mere 26 MP’s whilst Boris Johnson withdrew from the race.

The UK have a new prime minister - Rishi Sunak set to start his time in office asap.
