Novak Djokovic, the tennis star who was denied his visa and soon faced deportation because of his vaccination status, has been allowed to stay in Australia and compete in the Australian Open after successfully appealing the decision.
Djokovic claimed that he had a vaccine exemption because of his previous COVID-19 infection in December. Federal Court documents reveal that Djokovic submitted
his application 6 days after the deadline.
His alleged exemption caused controversy amongst the citizens of Australia concerning the fact that they had to follow full vaccination conditions in order to travel and partake in free movement. The prime minister of Australia was very much set on this deportation out of respect for rules and regulations.
Djokovic’s release was confirmed on the basis that immigration officials had handled the situation in the wrong manner by making the decision to cancel his visa.
However, Australia’s immigration minister warned that they still have the power to re-cancel his visa and deport the unvaccinated player. At the moment, Novak Djokovic has been re-granted his visa and will be playing in the Australian Open.
