On Saturday, October 8th, a blast hit the bridge linking Crimea and Russia. Parts of the bridge were affected, disrupting a primary transport link between mainland Russia and the annexed peninsula. However, limited traffic on the bridge resumed 24 hours following the explosion. The attack was another blow to Russia, who has suffered multiple setbacks on fronts in Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Kherson.
In the early hours after the bridge explosion, Russian officials reported their explanation of the attack: a massive explosive was hidden in a truck and was detonated as the truck crossed the bridge. However, it is essential to note that there is no confirmation of this explanation. In an interview with the head of Russia’s Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, Putin said, “There is no doubt that this is a terrorist attack aimed at destroying the critical civilian infrastructure of the Russian Federation.” He also went on to state that the special services of Ukraine carried out this attack. On the other hand, Ukraine has not taken responsibility for the attack. However, Dmytro Marchenko, a Ukrainian Maj. Gen. Major General said, “This will be the number one target to hit.” Although the question of what exactly happened on the Crimea bridge and who caused the attacks remains a question, attacks in Ukraine have escalated in response.
