What seemed like a normal early morning in Sacramento, California, on April 3rd, turned into a horrifying and deadly morning. At 2 am, gunshots were fired near 10th Street and K street according to Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester.

Amidst the chaos and confusion, people ran for their lives, in all directions, away from the scene. Nearby police responded immediately, but it was too little too late for so many. Six people died on the spot — Johntaya Alexander, Melinda Davis, Sergio Harris, Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, Yamile Martinez-Andrade, and Devazia Turner, and 12 others were injured. While addressing the event, Sacramento Mayor said, “How many unending tragedies does it take before we begin to cure the sickness in this country?”

As the investigation continues, authorities are now asking witnesses to speak out and submit video recordings of the scene as they try to piece together what happened that morning. Sacramento Police stated on Sunday that it was likely that more than five suspects were involved in the shooting. Sacramento Mayor further described the event as “a senseless and unacceptable tragedy”, vowing to bring justice to those who lost their lives.

The event marks the deadliest mass shooting in the city's history. On Monday, Lester confirmed that police arrested 26-year-old Dandrae Martin as a "related suspect" behind the mass shooting. Martin has a long history of committing misdemeanor domestic violence crimes. He has also been wanted in Riverside County since 2015 when he was released from prison after a 30-day sentence. The next day, his brother, Smiley Martin, was arrested, and on Thursday, a third suspect for being involved in the shooting. Police say there are still suspects on the run and warn citizens to be on the lookout.
