Seven years ago, Russia seized control over part of southern Ukraine when Ukraine deposed their Pro-Russian President in 2014. In this way, Russia has successfully threatened military measures compelling the US to put forward an ultimatum, one which discusses that if Russia invades, the US would be obligated to hit back with unprecedented sanctions.
Although there hasn’t been an imminent threat or a decision on an invasion by Russian President Vladimir Putin, there have been conversations on the topic of retaliation against US military aggression because NATO had previously verbally promised to give up military activity in Eastern Europe and Ukraine.
However, western intuitions suspect that a Russian invasion could occur sometime in early 2022. Though measures are being taken by the leaders of involved nations, there are hopes of further negotiations in Geneva in January 2022 concerning President Putin and US President Joe Biden.
Evidence leading to the potential threat of a Russian invasion keeps the US focused on negotiating terms with East Europe regarding NATO as well as the stance of Ukraine.
